In commemoration of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse reaching its 90th anniversary on May 1, 2025, and to promote lighthouse cultural tourism, the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) updated the permanent exhibition with the theme “Easternmost Light of Taiwan: Sandiaojiao Lighthouse.” The exhibition, currently showcasing stories, artifacts, and images of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse, will be open for free public viewing starting on January 11th , 2025. Welcome to reflect upon the historic splendor of this lighthouse.
According to the MPB, this exhibition includes the debut of a guestbook signed by notable figures, including former President Tsai Ing-Wen and former Minister Wang Kwo-Tsai of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The guestbook also features an inscription from former Minister of Justice Chen Ding-Nan that reads, “Witnessing Easternmost Taiwan.” Other items on display include rare photographs of the lighthouse from 1946, historical lighthouse archives, commemorative stamps, a National Day ceremonial hat, and uniforms worn by lighthouse personnel during the customs period. These items make the exhibition particularly engaging for visitors.
The Sandiaojiao Lighthouse, first lit in 1935, has a history spanning 90 years and remains the easternmost lighthouse on the island. Its construction began during the Japanese colonial period following the shipwreck of the Japanese vessels Bujun Maru and Kwanan Maru near the Sandiaojiao coastal waters. During World War II, the lighthouse became a target of allied airstrikes, leaving visible damage on its dome and lenses as lasting evidence of the war. After the war, repairs were completed, and the lighthouse resumed operations in 1946. Given its major military value, the lighthouse was designated as a restricted area and remained closed to the public until 1992.
The MPB stated that the exhibition comprises seven main themes: “About the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse Lighthouse,” “Key Events in the History of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse,” “The Origins of Japanese Shipwrecks,” “Travel with the Lighthouse,” “Stories of Sandiaojiao,” “The Loneliest Profession: Lighthouse Keepers,”[s1] and “Lighthouse Keeper’s Job: Switching on the Lights.” These themes guide visitors on a cultural journey through Taiwan’s 36 lighthouses and the four extreme points of the island, showcasing the history of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse and the dedication of its keepers.
In addition to its rich content, the exhibition features interactive elements, such as a traditional electrical switchboard that simulates lighting operations, enhancing visitor engagement. Furthermore, the MPB designed commemorative stamps and postcards for the exhibition, which are available to the public free of charge, offering a lasting memento of this lighthouse cultural journey. To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse, the MPB launched the updated permanent exhibition as the opening event in a series of celebratory activities. The public is encouraged to participate and experience the unique charm of the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse, which continues to shine brightly throughout history.
