Kaomei Lighthouse was built in1967 . The setup took into account the lack of any mark to provide location to the ships between Paisha Chia Lighthouse and Mudou Lighthouse. Thus, the midpoint between the two lighthouses was chosen as the location to build a new lighthouse, which is the Kaomei Lighthouse we see now. The existence of the lighthouse provides a new attraction for the south coast of Dajia Xikou and also provides more security to the ships entering and leaving the west coast of Taiwan and Wuqi port.

Due to the changes in navigation marks after Taichung port was opened as an international port, Kaomei Lighthouse officially stopped operating in 1982. The lantern was also completely stored in the Far Eastern Silo, which is at a higher altitude, the location of the current Taichung Kang Lighthouse. However, Kaomei Lighthouse wasn’t left out. It became the area of dorms for staff of Taichung Kang Lighthouse. It was opened to the public after the Maritime and Port Bureau renovated it on September 27th , 2014 . This headless lighthouse body (no lantern) that was left alone at Kaomei Wetland is always mistaken as an incinerator. There used to be a fountain with 6-meter diameter in the area, whose water was directed from a well 5 meters deep. It used to be a place where kids bathed and swam, but the water from the well was discontinued and the fountain stopped working after the earthquake on September 21st,1999. The bathing beach next to the lighthouse was closed due to accumulated sand.
