Lanyu Lighthouse, completed in 1983, is located atop a mountain on the northwestern side of Lanyu Township. The lighthouse is a white, circular structure made of reinforced concrete.
Following the designation of Hualien Port as an international harbor, cargo ship traffic between Hualien and Kaohsiung increased significantly. At the time, the only lighthouses available to guide ships along this route were Lu Tao Lighthouse and Eluan Pi Lighthouse, which are approximately 180 kilometers apart. To enhance maritime safety, the Customs Administration began construction of the Lanyu Lighthouse in 1982.
Due to its location on high ground, the light of the Lanyu Lighthouse is situated 216.5 meters above sea level, making it the lighthouse with the highest light height in Taiwan.
