Completed in 1939 atop Huayu Mountain in Penghu, Hua Yu Lighthouse is the westernmost lighthouse in Taiwan. The site locates on the highest point of Huayu Moutain which is about 35 meters above sea level. As a key military location, the lighthouse was constructed by Japanese and serves as a prominent local landmark. During WWII, due to a shortage of acetylene gas, the lighthouse was deactivated, which inadvertently helped preserve it from wartime destruction.
