Taichung Kan Lighthouse was built in 1982, located on the top of a warehouse by Taichung Kan wharf, the only one built on top of a building and the highest lighthouse in Taiwan. Due to the lack of a good location mark between Taoyuan and Penghu, the customhouse built Kaomei lighthouse in 1967 and built Taichung Kan lighthouse in 1982. However, the distance of these 2 towers and Fong-Yuan lighthouse was too close, so the customhouse closed down the Kaomei lighthouse and transferred the lamp to Taichung Kan lighthouse.
