The Liouciou Lighthouse, built in 1929, is located atop Xiao Liuqiu Island, an island of Pingtung County. The lighthouse is a white, circular structure made of reinforced concrete.
It is the only lighthouse in Taiwan that was funded and constructed by a local fishermen’s association during the Japanese colonial period. The lighthouse was damaged during WWII and ceased operation. In 1952, the responsibility for its repair and management was transferred to the Customs Administration.
Liouciou Island is the only coral reef island among Taiwan's outlying islands. With its abundant fishery resources and strikingly shaped coral rock formations, it is one of the most important tourist destinations in southern Taiwan.
