Taiping Island is the southernmost territory of Taiwan, located at the northwestern of the Zheng He Reefs, and is the largest naturally formed coral island in the Spratly Islands, covering an area of 0.5 square kilometers. The island is approximately 1,600 kilometers from Taiwan main island. Shaped in an elongated form, Taiping Island stretches about 1,360 meters from east to west and 350 meters from north to south. Its terrain is flat and low-lying, with the highest point rising no more than 3 meters above sea level. The coastline is characterized by reef platforms.
The island is administered under Cijin District, Kaohsiung City, and hosts a detachment of the Coast Guard Administration of the ROC(Taiwan). Due to the strategic location of the Spratly Islands—serving as a key connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans—and the abundant natural resources such as petroleum, natural gas, and fisheries, the Taiping Island Lighthouse was constructed to reinforce sovereignty claims.
The lighthouse was designed as an automated, unmanned facility, equipped with a backup system that activates in case of malfunction to ensure continuous operation. MPB dispatches personnel for regular inspections and maintenance.
Construction of Taiping Island Lighthouse commenced on April 13, 2015, was completed on October 11, 2015, and officially lit on December 12, 2015.
