Established in 1956 on the top of Chiutzu Shan at the west pier of Keelung Harbor, Chiutzu Shan Lighthouse was the first lighthouse fully designed and constructed by Taiwanese. It was originally a white rectangular concrete tower and later painted camouflage green when the site became a military post. Its function was replaced by other lighthouses and beacons in 1991 due to the removal of nearby reefs and its deactivation followed. Now, it was repainted white. The lighthouse was originally aligned with Keelung Lighthouse to guide ships safely into harbor.
