Eluan Pi lighthouse was built in 1883, located at the southernmost point of Taiwan at Hengchun Township, Pingtung County. It is a painted white iron frame round tower facing southwest, and it was built with loopholes on the walls and with trench surrounding the tower, which makes it the only armed lighthouse in R.O.C.. In 1962, the lens was replaced with powerful rotating Fresnel lens and becomes the lighthouse with furthest light distance in Taiwan and was titled to “The Light of East Asia”. Currently under Kenting National Park administration, and is one of eight great scenic views in Taiwan. It was opened to public in 1992.
